Seven workers lost their lives at a Ukrainian steel plant in Zaporizhzhia during a Russian assault on Tuesday, as confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stated that Moscow utilized North Korean ballistic missiles in the attack. The Zaporizhstal plant was compelled to cease operations following the strike, where Russia targeted Zaporizhzhia with Zircon hypersonic missiles, guided aerial bombs, and ballistic missiles provided by Pyongyang. The parent company Metinvest Group reported that the ballistic missile strike occurred as employees were seeking shelter following the air-raid alert, resulting in seven fatalities and 24 injuries.
The attack not only halted production at the plant but also impacted other damaged facilities that were operating at reduced capacity, according to the company. The Russian Defence Ministry disclosed that the assault targeted a metallurgical plant producing flat-rolled steel in Zaporizhzhia, which was allegedly utilized by the Ukrainian military. Additionally, Russian forces attacked the Nova Poshta sorting complex in Kyiv, described as a distribution center for dual-use goods, including drone components and electronic warfare equipment.
Ukraine continued its offensive with drone strikes, leading to casualties in various regions, including Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk. In a retaliatory move, a Russian assault on Kyiv caused fires in the capital. The ongoing conflict saw Ukrainian drone strikes resulting in casualties and damage in Russian territories, such as the recent attack in Nizhnekamsk that claimed lives and caused injuries. Another drone strike in Russia’s Voronezh region caused disruptions at warehouse facilities, prompting the evacuation of assets by companies like Wildberries for safety reasons.
Moreover, Russia’s utilization of North Korean ballistic missiles in numerous attacks on Ukraine since late 2023 has raised concerns. President Zelenskyy disclosed plans for significant North Korean troop deployment in Russia to support Moscow, highlighting the deepening military cooperation between the two countries. The strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea, established two years ago, includes mutual assistance provisions in case of external threats. North Korea previously dispatched troops to Russia following incursions by Ukrainian forces, showcasing the extent of their collaboration.
Furthermore, North Korea’s provision of military resources to Russia, including artillery, ballistic missiles, and long-range artillery systems, has escalated the conflict. Russia’s deployment of modified Iranian attack drones, known as Geran, equipped with new features like jet engines to penetrate deeper into Ukrainian territory, underscores the evolving tactics in the war. On the other hand, Ukraine has received support from allies like the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and France, providing a range of missiles to bolster its defense capabilities.
