A recent widely-shared incident involving a grizzly bear and new findings underscore the significance of keeping dogs on a leash while out hiking. A woman potentially faces a hefty fine following a TikTok video in July that amassed millions of views, featuring a man confronting a grizzly bear with bear spray while a small off-leash dog ran around. The video showcased grizzly bear No. 142, a recognizable female bear, peacefully strolling along the Taylor Lake trail in Banff National Park without exhibiting any aggression.
The woman behind the viral video is set to appear in court in Canmore later this month. A recent peer-reviewed study titled “The Canine Conundrum: Is a Dog a Help or Hindrance in Bear Country?” delved into incidents akin to the video, analyzing 326 documented human-bear conflicts from 1901 to 2023 involving dogs. The study revealed that 54% of conflicts were instigated by dogs, resulting in five human and 56 dog fatalities, along with injuries to 170 individuals.
Lana Ciarniello, a co-author of the study, emphasized that hiking in a group reduces the likelihood of negative bear encounters by 50%. However, the presence of a dog heightens the chances of a negative bear encounter due to the added chaos it introduces. The study was prompted by a fatal grizzly bear attack on two hikers and their dog in the Red Deer Valley area of Banff National Park in 2023.
The study warned that dog-bear conflicts not only impact the involved parties but also shape public perceptions of critical ecosystems. It recommended that carrying deterrents, leashing dogs, and hiking in groups could significantly minimize conflict risks. Injuries were found to be 4.5 times more frequent for individuals with off-leash dogs compared to those with leashed dogs, with more bear encounters involving off-leash dogs.
Ciarniello urged compliance with on-leash dog regulations, which are mandatory in Canada’s national parks, and suggested exploring dog restrictions in crucial grizzly habitat zones. Parks Canada experts proposed “enhanced dog restrictions” across Banff National Park following the tragic deaths of two hikers and their dog in 2023, emphasizing the necessity for a reevaluation of dog-related policies in protected areas.
The report stressed the importance of complying with leash regulations, citing the frequent lack of adherence despite wildlife encounters in the park. Although no immediate changes were made based on the report, it highlighted the foreseeable increase in risks of negative dog-wildlife encounters as park visitation rises. The report also referenced examples from U.S. national parks where dogs are prohibited on trails and in backcountry areas.
Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety & More, advised pet owners to assess their dog’s behavior around wildlife before bringing them into such environments. She recommended that individuals encountering bears should prioritize safety measures such as stepping off the trail, carrying bear spray, keeping dogs leashed, and focusing on safety rather than filming the encounter. Titchener emphasized the importance of remaining calm during bear encounters and prioritizing safety over capturing video footage.
