Many key leaders were notably absent from the annual roundtable meeting of northeastern U.S. governors and Canadian premiers, according to a political scientist at the University of Prince Edward Island. Don Desserud, the chair of political science at UPEI, pointed out that the no-shows reflect the escalating cross-border trade tensions.
Out of the Canadian attendees, only Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz were present at the 47th annual conference of the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers hosted by Vermont Governor Phil Scott. The remaining state governors sent representatives to the meeting.
Desserud highlighted that the current focus of premiers on practical solutions may have led to disinterest in the gathering due to strained U.S.-Canada relations. He emphasized that the significance of the meeting lies more in symbolism than practical outcomes, as per his remarks at the conclusion of the two-day event.
Among the notable absences were New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt, who opted to stay in the province to address local priorities, with Serge Breau representing the province. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham and Quebec Premier Christine Frechette were also missing, sending delegates in their place.
The dwindling attendance at the conference in recent years has been evident, with fewer high-level officials participating. The ongoing trade war between the two countries, initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, with impending tariffs on Canadian goods, was cited as a compelling reason for some leaders to skip the conference.
Despite the strained relations, Governor Phil Scott acknowledged the importance of maintaining strong connections between the U.S. and Canada, emphasizing collaborative efforts during the meeting to explore opportunities in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
Desserud, an expert in Maritime politics, acknowledged the rationale behind the absences but stressed the value of participating in such gatherings for fostering understanding between provinces and states. He expressed optimism for a future beyond trade disputes and emphasized the importance of maintaining cross-border relationships for future cooperation.
