Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen has announced his resignation by the end of the week due to ongoing health issues resulting from a car accident last year. Chen, who has represented Scarborough North since 2015, disclosed in a social media statement that the accident injuries have caused significant health challenges, hindering his ability to fulfill parliamentary responsibilities in Ottawa.
“After careful consideration with my family, I have concluded that stepping down as a Member of Parliament is the best decision for me,” Chen stated. Prior to his political role, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude towards Chen for his dedication to supporting youth and combating racism. Carney extended well wishes for Chen’s recovery and future endeavors, highlighting Chen’s continued positive impact on society.
Chen joins a growing list of MPs resigning during this summer, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall. Conservative MP Larry Brock is also set to step down in mid-September to join the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to leave his Montreal seat to pursue a provincial role with Québec Solidaire in October.
Chen’s resignation is scheduled for Saturday.
