“Storm Harry Transforms Malta Getaway into Ghost Town”

Date:

A popular winter getaway destination has been transformed into an abandoned town, as both residents and visitors sought refuge indoors.

Malta was battered by Storm Harry, experiencing strong winds of up to 120km per hour and high waves that breached coastal defenses, causing flooding in several towns, including Marsaskala.

The severe weather disrupted ferry services between Malta and Gozo, prompting hotels on the main island to offer discounted accommodations to stranded travelers. MaltaPost halted deliveries, and waste collection was suspended to prevent trash bags from littering the roads. The streets remained empty as locals followed advisories to stay indoors.

The Mirror’s Rachael Penn described her experience in the midst of the storm chaos while on a winter break in Valletta, Malta.

Typically known for its pleasant winter weather, Malta was hit unexpectedly by Storm Harry, bringing heavy rain and strong winds that led to warnings urging people to stay indoors until the weather passed. The usually bustling streets of Valletta turned desolate, with closed businesses and shuttered tourist attractions, creating an eerie atmosphere in the city.

Despite the adverse conditions, Rachael ventured out to explore Valletta, noting the unusual quietness and the absence of usual tourist activities. She recounted her visit to landmark pubs that remained open, providing shelter to those seeking respite from the storm.

After a meal at a local restaurant, Rachael returned to her hotel to witness a spectacular lightning storm, marking the end of the turbulent weather.

As the storm subsided, flight schedules gradually resumed normal operations, with the coastal areas bearing the brunt of the damage. Rachael concluded by reflecting on the surreal experience of witnessing the powerful forces of nature in a usually vibrant location.
