The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has recently been recognized as the world’s most beautiful airport for the second consecutive year. This prestigious title was bestowed upon the airport’s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 following a comprehensive architectural competition known as the Prix Versailles.
Renowned for its eco-friendly design, state-of-the-art facilities, and unique architectural features, the Harvey Milk Terminal 1 underwent a significant multi-billion-dollar renovation before its grand opening in June 2024. The terminal stands out for its emphasis on sustainability, providing a tranquil and welcoming environment for travelers with abundant natural light, gender-neutral restrooms, and a reduction in disruptive overhead announcements.
Named after LGBTQ+ pioneer Harvey Milk, the terminal also serves as a tribute to the American politician and features a museum gallery showcasing his legacy. Noteworthy amenities within the terminal include a mezzanine-level security checkpoint, new concessions, and a convenient connecting walkway linking various terminals post-security.
Furthermore, the terminal has achieved remarkable sustainability goals, reducing its carbon footprint by 79% and energy consumption by 59%. Despite some mixed reactions from travelers regarding its aesthetic appeal, the airport’s director, Mike Nakornkhet, expressed gratitude for the prestigious recognition, emphasizing the terminal’s commitment to providing an exceptional and environmentally conscious travel experience.
With over 50 million passengers passing through its four terminals annually, San Francisco International Airport continues to prioritize passenger satisfaction and environmental responsibility. The airport’s innovative approach and dedication to sustainability have solidified its reputation as a global leader in airport design and operations.
