A well-known hotel and dining establishment has abruptly ceased operations after operating for 46 years, causing distress among its clientele.
Situated by the canal on St Michael’s Road near Bilsborrow in Lancashire, Guys Thatched Hamlet, a 65-room hotel, has officially closed down. The closure has resulted in all employees being let go.
A closure notice has been affixed to the entrance of the hotel, officially confirming its shutdown. Encompassing nearly 14 acres, the property comprised a pub, eatery, sports pavilion, event spaces, a cricket ground, bowling green, and three parking lots.
As reported by the Lancashire Post, a statement posted at the entrance stated: “After 46 years of operation, we can confirm the closure of Guy’s Thatched Hamlet. This decision was difficult but well-considered. We extend our sincere gratitude to our patrons, staff, and suppliers for their dedication and backing over the years.”
Heartbroken patrons have taken to social media to express their sorrow. One individual mentioned, “This is where my partner proposed to me in 2012.” Another lamented, “I also got engaged here in 2015. Such a loss.”
Another commenter shared, “I have been a regular at Guys for many years and even proposed to my significant other in the restaurant, receiving applause from fellow diners. It’s sad to see it go, and hopefully, someone will preserve its essence.”
The Wilkinson family has managed the business since 1980 and listed it for sale last year, citing a net turnover of around £4.2 million. No specific price was disclosed in the listing.
The property, known as Guys Thatched Hamlet & Hotel, is strategically located near the Lake District, Fylde Coast, and the Trough of Bowland, offering 65 en suite guest rooms that cater to both leisure and commercial clientele. The business, under the family’s ownership for over four decades, has undergone significant renovations, expansions, and enhancements.
Renowned across the North West of England, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet has a robust year-round customer base, with peak activity during the summer and holiday seasons, particularly in its food and beverage segment.
