A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos for homeowners seeking a Sky Q-style upgrade without monthly fees. Launched recently, this device offers similar features to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record programs, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.
What sets the Manhattan S4-R apart is its cost structure. Unlike Sky Q, which necessitates monthly payments, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any ongoing fees once purchased. Utilizing Freesat, the S4-R leverages an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to your TV, including BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.
The device boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search functionality, and access to a vast library of on-demand content totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat’s advantage lies in its cost-free viewing experience.
The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is now retailing for £219.99 at stores like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected to launch soon. Strong demand is evident, as Argos lists the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”
According to Manhattan COO Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the S4-R aims to replicate the subscription-free experience of the T4-R Freeview recorder for Freesat users. He highlighted the S4-R’s enhanced recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit, making it an attractive alternative for households seeking a more affordable and flexible TV option.
In a similar vein, the Pleio puck, another innovative device, is challenging traditional TV providers by offering Freely streaming access to TVs without requiring an aerial. Delivering over 50 live channels over the internet, Pleio puck is now back in stock after initial shortages, available on platforms like Amazon and eBay for £99.99, inclusive of a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
Meanwhile, Sky has announced a 20% price reduction on the Sky Glass Air TV ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect to pay from £11 per month.
