“La Bola Negra” Wins People’s Choice at TIFF, Eyes Oscars

Date:

“La Bola Negra” triumphs as the recipient of the People’s Choice Award at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival, solidifying its position as a top contender for the prestigious Oscars. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the film weaves a grand narrative around the intertwined lives of three homosexual men in Spain. The festival’s award winners were unveiled by TIFF on Sunday.

The coveted top accolade at TIFF is determined by the votes of festival attendees and is renowned for its track record in predicting Academy Award winners. The directors expressed their gratitude, stating, “This film is deeply personal yet carries a profound message about the significance of embracing one’s true identity. Witnessing the audience’s resonance with the film and its themes is truly gratifying.”

Having already garnered acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, where it shared the best director award with Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Fatherland,” “La Bola Negra” caught the attention of Netflix, which acquired the film post-Cannes and has launched an extensive awards campaign. Netflix is set to give the film its most extended theatrical run on the platform, with a theatrical release scheduled for October 16 and streaming commencing on December 2.

In other notable wins, “Angh” secured the Platform Award, accompanied by a $20,000 prize, under the direction of Theja Rio. The film portrays the tale of the final surviving chief of a Nagaland village on the border of Indo-Burma. This year, the Platform Award offers a direct pathway to the best international feature film category at the Academy Awards, marking a significant change in the selection process.

Canadian filmmakers also received recognition at the festival, with Cody Lightning clinching the Best Canadian Discovery award for his second feature “Smudge the Blades.” The Best Canadian Feature honor went to Serville Poblete for “Sunburn,” a poignant coming-of-age story centered around a group of youths from Bleecker Street in Toronto.

Additionally, other recipients of the People’s Choice awards include Simon Stone’s “Elsinore” for international People’s Choice, “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” for Midnight Madness, and Barry Avrich’s “Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been” for People’s Choice documentary. This marks Avrich’s second consecutive win in the category, following last year’s unexpected victory with “The Road Between Us.”

The FIPRESCI Prize was bestowed upon Irish writer-director David Turpin for “Ancestors,” depicting an Irishman’s experiences in London during the 1980s when homosexuality was still illegal in Ireland. Moreover, the NETPAC Award recognized the Palestinian film “Thirteen in Gaza” by Hosam Abu Dan, narrating the story of a 13-year-old girl residing in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.
