“Canada, U.S. Struggle to Reach Tariff Deal as Deadline Nears”

Date:

Canada and the U.S. are facing challenges in reaching a tariff deal as the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump approaches. Sources familiar with the trade negotiations reveal that Canadian officials are not pleased with the latest offer from the U.S., which falls short of their expectations.

Reports indicate that the U.S. presented a new proposal on Tuesday aimed at reducing certain sectoral tariffs, although not to the extent desired by the Canadian side. Both countries have been engaged in discussions in an attempt to strike a deal before the looming Aug. 19 deadline, when Trump plans to impose a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian goods in addition to the existing sectoral tariffs.

Sources suggest that the U.S. is pushing for an agreement that would grant them preferential access to crucial Canadian minerals, along with provisions covering security and energy matters. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc has been actively meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, with efforts to present a potential trade deal to Trump soon.

It is emphasized that the Canadian negotiators have strongly conveyed to their American counterparts that continuing talks would be challenging if the Aug. 19 tariffs were implemented. Both sides have committed to holding daily meetings at various levels leading up to the deadline.

Meanwhile, LeBlanc’s office has confirmed that discussions are ongoing, with LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette remaining in Washington. Apart from discouraging new tariffs, the Canadian team is seeking relief from the existing U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber, and automobiles.

Canada is also hopeful that the ongoing trade discussions will pave the way for the renewal of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) after the Trump administration declined to extend the deal beyond 2036 last month.

In response to the upcoming tariffs, the U.S. has raised concerns over several trade issues, including Canada’s actions against U.S. alcohol sales and alleged discrimination against American motor vehicles and dairy products.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has urged for a robust approach in the negotiations, emphasizing the importance of securing a favorable deal for Canadians. Industry sources have indicated that Canada is considering meeting some U.S. demands, such as lifting alcohol bans, in exchange for tariff concessions.
