A convict killed his cellmate upon discovering that he was imprisoned with the individual who sexually assaulted his younger sister. Shane Goldsby, then 25 years old, was captured on video assaulting Robert Munger on June 2, 2020, at the Airways Heights Corrections Center in Washington, US. Munger, aged 70, was serving a 43-year sentence for offenses related to child rape, molestation, and child pornography. Goldsby expressed shock at being housed with the man who had harmed his underage sister, stating, “It’s unbelievable to be in the same cell, unit, and pod with this guy. It’s like winning the jackpot seven times in a casino.”
At the time, Goldsby was serving time for stealing a police vehicle. Despite having different surnames, there was no recognized connection between the two men according to an official investigation. Goldsby explained that tensions rose as Munger divulged details of his crimes, leading to a buildup of frustration. Goldsby had repeatedly requested to be relocated to a different cell, but his pleas went unheeded. He lamented the lack of response from prison authorities when he activated the emergency cell button before the fatal incident, suggesting a sense of neglect.
In August 2021, Goldsby was sentenced to an additional 298 months in prison for the murder. He offered a sincere apology to Munger’s family through his attorney, expressing remorse for his actions and acknowledging the pain he caused. During the court proceedings, Goldsby’s troubled upbringing, marked by abuse and instability, was revealed, shedding light on the challenging circumstances he faced growing up.
The Washington Department of Corrections labeled the incident as “unfortunate and complex,” noting that a cellmate policy should have prevented the pairing of Goldsby and Munger. However, due to a lack of knowledge about their connection, the two inmates were mistakenly placed in the same cell.
