Upon hearing of a city in the UK being hailed as the ‘world’s most beautiful’, my curiosity was piqued. Despite the inclement British weather on my journey to Chester, with rain and icy winds casting a gloomy shadow, I embarked with a hint of skepticism.
To my surprise, within just thirty minutes of exploring Chester, the justification behind its prestigious title became glaringly evident. The city seemed to be encapsulated in a bygone era, with the historic City Walls serving as a grand entrance into the heart of Chester. These Roman walls, extending nearly two miles and touted as the oldest, longest, and most intact in Britain, provide a captivating glimpse into the past.
Ascending a set of steps to walk atop these fortifications, one is treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings on a leisurely 45-minute circuit. Descending back to street level, strolling through the archways evokes a cinematic experience, as the slightly crooked buildings along the high street exude a unique charm, housing a mix of independent shops, bookstores, and cozy cafes nestled among larger retail chains.
The city offers a harmonious fusion of amenities catering to both locals running errands and tourists seeking keepsakes. The iconic timber-framed ‘Rows’ lining the high street stand out, providing a covered walkway adorned with boutique stores and shops, a welcome shelter during inclement weather.
Despite the unkind weather, the bustling high street teemed with shoppers and tourists, a rare sight in contemporary times. Chester’s historical allure extends beyond the City Walls, with the enchanting Chester Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the recognizable Suspension Bridge from the TV series “Hollyoaks” adding to its cultural richness.

The city’s pub scene boasts a diverse selection of traditional pubs, modern breweries, and upscale bars, drawing in locals for a night out in a laid-back ambiance distinct from neighboring cities like Liverpool.

Beyond its architectural splendor, a brief stroll outside the city exposes picturesque canalside walks and moorlands, with Grosvenor Park offering serene views of the Cheshire countryside. Despite the challenging weather, a walk along one of the trails provided a tranquil escape, momentarily disconnecting from city life.
