The proposal for a four-day school week has been rejected by an education minister due to concerns about its impact on school activities and student learning. Children’s minister Josh MacAlister acknowledged the appeal of the idea but emphasized that reducing the school week could hinder pupils’ educational progress and create challenges for families. While recognizing the need for improvements in the teaching profession’s flexibility, MacAlister highlighted ongoing efforts in this area.
The government responded to a petition signed by over 125,000 individuals calling for a shorter school week, stating that schools will maintain the current five-day structure. MacAlister stressed the importance of schools having sufficient time to provide a well-rounded curriculum, breaks, and extracurricular opportunities. He emphasized that a compressed schedule would limit students’ engagement in school clubs, sports, and homework.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to all state-funded mainstream schools delivering a minimum of 32.5 hours per school week. MacAlister advised that schools are encouraged to extend their hours beyond the minimum requirement to enhance pupil development and prioritize school objectives.
Regarding teacher workloads, MacAlister noted positive trends in reduced working hours for teachers compared to previous years. Efforts are being made to ensure teaching remains a sustainable and attractive career choice. The minister acknowledged the need for continued progress in teacher retention and recruitment.
During a parliamentary debate, MPs raised concerns about childcare challenges, mental health implications, and potential negative impacts of a longer school day on students’ well-being and academic performance. They also highlighted worries about reduced interaction time with teachers and the impact on homework and exam preparation.
