German authorities are currently investigating the discovery of a drone containing explosives and a detonator at Leipzig airport. In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Russia’s intention to escalate actions against nations supporting Ukraine. Lavrov emphasized in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, that harsher methods would be employed to disrupt support for Ukraine.
The drone, carrying an unknown explosive device, was found in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, classified as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport facilitating the transport of armaments, ammunition, and military equipment to Ukraine via Ukrainian cargo companies.
The incident, described by Germany’s interior minister as a new level of danger, involved the drone positioned near a Ukrainian cargo plane. The German authorities are treating the incident as part of a professional hybrid threat scenario, ruling out amateur involvement.
While investigations are ongoing, U.S. intelligence officials have suggested that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government. Berlin is cautious in its response, enhancing anti-drone capabilities without premature attribution.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted the daily targeting of Germany through hybrid warfare tactics such as espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert actions by foreign entities. Recent incidents, including the drone discovery, reinforce the country’s exposure to new threats on a regular basis.
In past instances, Russia was implicated in a plot to assassinate the CEO of a German defense contractor and espionage activities targeting Berlin’s military support for Ukraine. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue has documented Russian interference in German affairs through digital campaigns like Operation Overload, focusing on undermining Ukraine’s efforts and destabilizing democracies.
The escalating hybrid warfare poses significant challenges to Germany, requiring a strategic response to counter foreign interference. The recent drone incident in Leipzig underscores the need for heightened vigilance and preparedness against such threats in the future.
