“Canadian Tire & Tim Hortons Launch Joint Loyalty Program”

Date:

Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. and Tim Hortons have collaborated to enhance their customer engagement through a joint loyalty program initiative. This partnership allows customers to connect their Triangle and Tims Rewards accounts, enabling them to earn an additional two to five percent in Canadian Tire money on select Tims purchases, in addition to Tims points.

The primary goal of this collaboration is to attract Tim Hortons customers to Canadian Tire locations and vice versa. Currently, 53 percent of Triangle Rewards customers are already enrolled in both loyalty programs. Canadian Tire boasts approximately 12 million Triangle Rewards members across its 1,600 locations, while Tim Hortons has eight million loyalty program users across its 4,000 Canadian restaurants.

Darryl Jenkins, the executive vice-president and chief development officer of Canadian Tire, mentioned that the partnership aims to fuel growth in both Triangle Rewards and Tim Hortons rewards membership. The amount of Canadian Tire money earned by shoppers will vary based on their payment method, including the use of a Triangle credit card, and the nature of their purchases.

Canadian Tire money can be redeemed for discounts at various retailers under the Canadian Tire umbrella, such as SportChek, Mark’s, and Party City. On the other hand, Tims points can be utilized for food and beverage purchases at Tim Hortons outlets.

The collaboration between the two companies was a natural progression, as executives from Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons frequently interact through shared board memberships and sponsorship of mutual events. This partnership emerged from a desire to enhance the value proposition for customers.

While the partnership was met with optimism, some industry experts like Liza Amlani from the Retail Strategy Group expressed concerns about the saturation of loyalty programs in the market. Amlani emphasized the importance of simplicity, transparency, and genuine rewards to ensure that the partnership benefits customers as much as the brands involved.

The announcement of this partnership was made almost a year ago, with the official launch occurring on Wednesday after a period of technical preparations to ensure seamless integration. Jenkins highlighted the coincidental timing of the launch amidst recent trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, indicating that it was not strategically planned but rather serendipitous.
