“Trump Urges Apple: Rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ on iPhones”

Date:

In a recent development, Google Maps has implemented “Lake America” labels, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to urge Apple to make a similar change on all iPhones. This situation underscores the dominance of American tech companies in Canada, leaving consumers and businesses with limited non-American options.

Anne Pasek, a Canada Research Chair at Trent University, emphasized the pervasive influence of American tech monopolies on Canadians’ digital lives and the broader legal implications.

Several Canadian websites, including federal government portals and major banks, have shown Lake Ontario as Lake America following Trump’s directive amid ongoing trade tensions. Google adjusted the label for U.S. users but provided a localization option for non-American websites to retain the original name.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum mentioned that Trump reached out to Apple regarding the name change, but Apple has not commented on the matter. The mapping tools from U.S. tech giants not only offer navigation assistance but also support various Canadian businesses with essential information and operations.

Emily Osborne from the Canadian Shield Institute highlighted the dependency of Canada on American tech companies for digital services. She suggested TomTom and HERE Technologies as potential alternatives to Google and Apple. The acquisition of Toronto-based Avenza Systems by Blue Marble Geographics raised concerns about potential tech-related pressures from the U.S. administration.

Osborne warned about vulnerabilities in Canadian businesses relying on U.S.-owned digital infrastructure, particularly in scenarios where access could be restricted. The dependence on American payment processors like Visa and MasterCard poses significant risks if alternative options are not available.

Overall, the situation raises questions about Canada’s exposure to potential tech-based constraints and the need for diversified digital ecosystems.
