This novel revisits the familiar setting of Barry’s Bay, Ont., which was featured in Fortune’s previous works, “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” and holds sentimental value as her hometown.
In a recent newsletter, Fortune shared her excitement about purchasing a lakeside cottage near Barry’s Bay before commencing her writing journey. The desire to own a cottage has been a long-standing dream since her family home by the lake was sold.
The protagonist of “Only in Summer,” Eleanor Florek, also harbors a similar dream as she aims to secure a property in Barry’s Bay. Ellie, the cousin of Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s prior Barry’s Bay novels, grew up in the town and is thrilled to realize her dream. However, her plans are disrupted when a neighboring house is demolished to make way for a lavish new residence, setting the stage for a probable romance amidst the lakeside backdrop.
