After nearly four years since post-tropical storm Fiona caused extensive damage to Red Head Harbour in eastern P.E.I., the fishing port is set to undergo significant improvements. The announcement on Tuesday revealed plans for reconstruction work at the harbour near Morell, focusing on completing the western wharf to enhance safety and resilience against future weather events.
Tommy Drake, a fisherman operating from the harbour, expressed optimism about the upgrades, emphasizing the need for additional space due to the current congestion during gear setup in the spring. The 2022 storm had inflicted damage on approximately 75% of the harbour’s infrastructure, leading to the decision to elevate and fortify the wharf while replacing the floating docks with sturdier structures.
This initiative marks the second phase of the harbour’s reconstruction, following the initial addition of a new breakwater. Future plans include structural repairs for the eastern wharf. Kent MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, acknowledged the existing space constraints for fishers at Red Head Harbour and confirmed that construction on the western wharf is scheduled to commence next year after the tender process in early spring.
Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson highlighted the importance of evaluating the harbour’s future needs to withstand the challenges posed by rising sea levels and severe weather events. MacDonald, emphasizing the significance of small craft harbours in the region, prioritized expediting the repair process to support local fisheries.
Drake anticipated positive outcomes from the upgrades, foreseeing the removal of older dilapidated structures to make way for new buildings for equipment storage. He also expected a boost in tourism activity and foot traffic in the area as a result of the improvements.
