“Toronto Tempo’s New Mascots, Dez and Dot, Stir Mixed Reactions”

Date:

The WNBA’s Toronto Tempo recently introduced their new mascots during a game, but the reception from fans has been mixed. Dez the snapping turtle and Dot the Arctic hare, inspired by Aesop’s fable, represent different paces and are now symbols for Canada’s lone WNBA team. Dez, hailing from Muskoka, enjoys music and soft-shell tacos, while Dot, representing Toronto, is energetic and a fan of cotton candy and the Netflix documentary series “Drive to Survive.”

Their unique backgrounds and contrasting personalities led them to discover a shared love for rhythm, eventually bringing them together in Toronto. Despite the franchise’s attempt to create mascots reflective of their Canadian identity, some critics feel the choices do not align with Toronto’s culture, suggesting beavers or raccoons would have been more fitting selections.

While some have expressed displeasure with the design and concept of the mascots, others appreciate the “tortoise and the hare” dynamic and find them endearing. Speculation about the mascots’ relationship and sexuality has also sparked discussions among fans. However, a reporter confirmed that Dez and Dot are simply best friends, not siblings or partners.

As the Toronto Tempo struggle on the court with a challenging season and a recent playoff elimination, the new mascots continue to generate conversation and opinions among supporters and critics alike.
