A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history in North America by being the first recipient of a regenerated liver, thanks to an innovative technology that could potentially increase the availability of transplantable livers by dozens within its initial year. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, had been grappling with liver issues for around 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Prior to his surgery for a liver transplant, Landry received surprising news from his doctor that the liver he was about to receive had been regenerated using a cutting-edge machine, utilized for the first time at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). Describing it as akin to a Christmas gift, Landry shared his excitement about the new technology.
Known as Liver Assist, this technology enables medical professionals to treat and evaluate a donated liver externally before transplantation. For Landry, this meant receiving a liver that might have otherwise been considered too risky for use due to the advancements made by the machine.
Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s operation. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation while the liver is outside the body. Subsequently, doctors can transition to a blood-based solution to assess the liver’s functionality in conditions simulating the human body.
Hénault mentioned that the technology offers a chance for donated livers to recover and become suitable for transplantation, potentially expanding the pool of available livers. Collaborating with Transplant Québec, the team identified livers previously rejected for transplantation that could be salvaged using this new technology. The estimated impact is an additional 20 to 24 livers becoming available for transplantation in the inaugural year, with potential growth as the technology gains wider adoption.
Apart from increasing liver availability, studies have indicated that this technology can lead to reduced complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for eligible patients. Landry’s post-transplant progress showed promising signs, with his blood work surpassing expectations soon after the surgery. Hénault attributed Landry’s positive outcome partially to the assistance provided by the machine during the transplantation process.
As Landry continues his recovery in Montreal, anticipating a return to Gaspésie once he is fully healed, he expresses eagerness to reunite with his family, grandson, friends, and horses. He hopes that his journey will inspire discussions about organ donation, emphasizing the critical need for donated organs to complement advanced medical technology in saving lives.
