A grand jury in Los Angeles County has charged Nick Reiner with murder for the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, alleging that he ambushed them. The indictment was issued on July 20 after the grand jury deliberated in private and was revealed when 32-year-old Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty.
Rob Reiner, a prominent figure in Hollywood as a director and actor, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home on December 14. Nick Reiner was swiftly apprehended and formally charged two days later.
The grand jury’s decision marks a significant progression towards a trial, allowing prosecutors to bypass the preliminary hearing stage in California. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the act as a severe betrayal by someone the victims deeply cared for.
The newly unsealed indictment discloses limited information, mentioning the lying in wait accusation that could make Reiner eligible for the death penalty. However, the prosecution has not confirmed if they will pursue this punishment. Details on the circumstances surrounding the alleged ambush and the use of a weapon were also included in the indictment.
Despite the ongoing secrecy and lack of disclosed motives, the case continues to raise questions. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports but has been restricted by a court order.
In a separate legal matter, Nick Reiner is seeking funds from a trust established by his parents to support his defense. He claims that the trustees are withholding the money without valid reason, despite it being intended for him even if his parents were alive.
The petition filed by Reiner also seeks the rehiring of prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson, as his initial legal representation was terminated due to funding issues. A hearing on the trust matter is scheduled for the upcoming week.
The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment. The legal proceedings in California can either involve a public preliminary hearing or a grand jury process conducted in secrecy, as seen in this case.
