Artificial intelligence has ventured beyond movies and music to establish its presence on a prominent streaming platform, the Roku Channel, by launching Fairground AI Creator TV – a channel offering fully AI-generated content around the clock for free. While Roku did not officially announce this addition, Cord Cutters News was the first to report it.
Despite the initiative, the online community has shown a mixed reaction, with some viewers expressing discontent towards the channel. Criticisms have surfaced, with statements like “Roku is providing an endless supply of AI-generated content that nobody requested,” as mentioned by Frank Landymore of Futurism.
Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, indicating a free, ad-supported streaming television service. Although there are approximately 200 FAST channels accessible on the Roku Channel in Canada, Fairground AI is not currently among them, and there is no confirmation on its future availability in Canada.
Roku, a leading global streaming platform, was acquired by Fox in a monumental $22 billion deal earlier this year, granting access to over 100 million households worldwide. This move by Roku coincides with a surge in AI-generated content across various sectors, such as the recent AI-generated film showcased at the Tribeca Festival and Hasbro’s introduction of AI-powered character versions.
Fairground AI’s CEO, Colin Petrie-Norris, anticipates a trajectory akin to YouTube’s evolution for the AI channel, emphasizing the potential growth and impact of AI creators in the entertainment landscape. The decision to introduce AI content aligns with industry trends focused on cost-efficiency and maximizing viewer engagement on streaming platforms.
As the AI content landscape expands, questions regarding creative control, copyright compliance, and privacy protections remain unresolved. Industry experts, like Professor Fenwick McKelvey of Concordia University, underscore the importance of addressing these issues to ensure fair compensation for creators and safeguard artistic integrity in the era of AI-generated content.
