Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, shared her experience of adjusting to a new responsibility after losing her mother this summer. She now serves as the primary caregiver for her brother Stuart, who is neurodivergent like her. Stuart, an autistic left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities due to physical and emotional challenges.
Growing up, Simone felt embarrassed by Stuart’s behaviors, which were often misunderstood by others. She now realizes that they share similarities in their neurodivergent experiences, with her ADHD requiring similar coping mechanisms. To maintain harmony at home, she actively manages her own tendencies to avoid triggering Stuart’s sensitivities, creating a supportive environment for both siblings.
Simone acknowledges missed opportunities to advocate for Stuart in the past but sees their current living arrangement as a chance to strengthen their bond. Despite sacrifices like giving up her acting classes, she values their relationship and strives to provide a nurturing space for both of them. Embracing this second chance, she is committed to fostering a positive cohabitation dynamic for her and Stuart, recognizing the importance of understanding and acceptance in their unique journey together.
