U.S. President Donald Trump undertook a covert military journey from Turkey recently as a precaution against a potential Iranian threat. The operation involved a strategic plane switch using a catering truck to move the President between aircraft. Initially, the White House had stated that Trump was flying on Air Force One from Turkey to Britain after attending a NATO summit. However, moments after boarding Air Force One, Trump secretly exited the plane via the catering truck and transferred to another aircraft destined for Britain, as reported by the Washington Post, citing undisclosed sources.
Acknowledging the events, Trump confirmed the security measures taken on Tuesday, mentioning that the Secret Service and military recommended the aircraft switch due to a perceived threat, which he claimed did not intimidate him. He reassured that the individuals left on the original plane, including White House officials, security personnel, and journalists, were not at significant risk.
Speaking to reporters upon his return from an event in Ohio, Trump explained that he had limited involvement in the decision to switch planes, stating, “They wanted me to go on a different flight, different plane.” He expressed a nonchalant attitude towards the threat, mentioning, “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it,” adding, “I get a lot of threats.”
The circumstances surrounding the plane switch raised security concerns and sparked inquiries. Trump had flown to Ankara for the NATO summit on a recently renovated jet donated by Qatar. Surprisingly, he opted to use an older Air Force One plane when departing Turkey, causing speculation about the security of the newer aircraft. The trip occurred amid escalating tensions with Iran, Turkey’s neighboring country.
Before departing Ankara, Trump announced through his social media platform, Truth Social, that he would use the older baby blue Air Force One for the journey to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, while the new plane stopped at the same base for U.S. service members to view it. Journalists accompanying Trump on the older Air Force One, which served as a decoy, were instructed to keep their window shades closed during the flight.
According to reports, aside from the journalists, some White House staff were under the impression that the President was on board the original aircraft. Responding to queries about the closed window shades, Trump suggested it was for safety reasons, stating, “probably on a dangerous flight,” and asserting, “But if I go, you go. Right?”
