“Lost Tortoise from Sahara Desert Found in Manitoba Wetlands”

Date:

A surprise discovery was made at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake when Molly, an African spurred tortoise native to the Sahara desert, was found wandering slowly along the wetland’s edge. The staff, led by Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at Oak Hammock, were puzzled by the presence of the 36-kilogram tortoise in a location so far from its natural habitat.

After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, the staff embarked on a search and rescue mission, initially assuming it was a common snapping turtle. However, a sighting logged on the iNaturalist app confirmed the unusual presence of the tortoise, prompting the team to locate Molly swiftly.

The staff were taken aback by the tortoise’s size when they found her in the parking lot, where she had ventured after escaping from her family’s yard 20 kilometers away. Molly was cared for by the Oak Hammock staff, who fed her cucumbers and flower petals and ensured her safe return home to her delighted family.

It was revealed that Molly had been a beloved pet for 15 years, raised by her family since she was a baby. Despite her escape through a gap in the backyard fence, she managed to navigate her way to the marsh, leaving everyone astonished at her adventurous journey.

Speculations arose about how Molly reached the marsh, with theories suggesting that a well-meaning Samaritan may have relocated her or that she traveled the distance independently. The staff marveled at Molly’s resilience and the mystery surrounding her incredible voyage.

The heartwarming reunion between Molly and her family highlighted the extraordinary tale of the wayward tortoise’s unexpected visit to Oak Hammock Marsh, a story that captured the attention and curiosity of all involved.
