A peculiar deep-sea ‘dragon’ shark has astounded spectators by appearing on a tourist beach. The pregnant Portuguese shark, typically residing 3,500 meters below the ocean’s surface, weighed 40 pounds (18 kilograms) and stretched an impressive 4 feet 8 inches (1.45 meters) long. It was discovered on Luarca Beach in north-western Spain on Saturday.
Formerly known as a Portuguese dogfish, this shark species was once extensively caught in the region for its meat and oil production but is now on the verge of endangerment. The species predominantly feeds on fish, molluscs, and sea mammals, occasionally engaging in conflicts with giant squid. However, due to excessive fishing and low reproductive rates, the species has dwindled in numbers, leading to a ban on capturing them.
Designated as ‘Near Threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, these sharks are under close watch for their survival. Luis Laria, the president of the Centre for Studies and Protection of Marine Species, conducted an examination on the shark to determine the cause of death and why it washed up on the beach.
Luis described the incredible attributes of the shark, highlighting its ability to withstand immense pressures at great depths. Following the autopsy, it was inconclusive to ascertain the exact reason for the shark’s demise. Speculation suggests that the shark was ensnared by a fishing crew but managed to escape, resulting in fatal injuries.
The autopsy revealed no definite cause of death but presented surprising findings, including gestation with large developing eggs, a significant liver weight, and indications of potential accidental capture. Local residents noted similarities between the creature and characters from the How to Train Your Dragon series, describing its unique features and captivating appearance.
