Co-op is set to introduce innovative “flexi checkouts” in its stores to reduce waiting times for customers. These advanced tills can seamlessly switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preference, aiming to enhance convenience and efficiency. Supplied by leading American company Diebold Nixdorf, these new checkouts will be deployed in 150 Co-op stores by April.
In addition to the flexibility of choosing between self-service and cashier-assisted checkouts, the new screens will display price discounts, special offers, and upcoming promotions. They may also serve as collection points for parcels in the future. Co-op proudly claims to be the first supermarket in the UK to implement this cutting-edge technology.
David Tyas, the head of operations, support center, and innovation at Co-op, expressed the company’s commitment to creating local stores that cater to community needs. Acknowledging that some customers prefer interacting with staff while others prioritize quick transactions, the introduction of these new checkouts aims to strike a balance between personalized service and efficient operations.
Co-op recently announced the opening of 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store of the year is situated in Willowbrook Park, Didcot in Oxfordshire, as part of a new neighborhood development. Several stores, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated outlet in Ealing, London, are also undergoing refurbishments and will soon reopen.

The focus is on enhancing the shopping experience for members and customers alike. With plans to expand its presence across the UK, Co-op is starting 2026 with an ambitious store opening program.
Moreover, Co-op has unveiled a significant initiative to generate thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. Through a £70 million investment via its Levy Share service, Co-op aims to create 7,000 apprenticeship opportunities by 2030, demonstrating its commitment to supporting skills development and employment growth.
