A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study shows that many smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value for money.
The research indicates that internet connection issues are widespread, with frequent dropouts being a common complaint among consumers. Slow download speeds and service outages also contribute to customer frustrations.
A significant 91% of broadband users reported experiencing problems with their service in the past year, highlighting the rarity of trouble-free connections. Sky emerged as the worst performer for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers facing this issue. Virgin Media also struggled, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices.
Among dissatisfied customers, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds. Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received poor ratings from consumers.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic excelled in reliability, with fewer reported issues compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
According to Which?, smaller broadband firms consistently outshine larger providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money. The organization encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if unsatisfied with their current service.
