Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton has expressed his desire for Africa to reclaim its resources and gain independence from nations like Britain, France, Spain, and others. The celebrated racer also envisions the sport returning to the continent before his retirement.
During a press conference ahead of the Australian Grand Prix as the 2026 season kicks off in Melbourne, Hamilton was questioned by a South African journalist about the possibility of a race in Africa. The seven-time world champion seized the opportunity to emphasize his wish for the continent to unite and take control of its destiny, highlighting ongoing exploitation concerns.
Hamilton passionately remarked, “Africa is a stunning part of the world, and it’s disheartening to witness its resources being exploited by other countries without much discussion. I hope to see the leaders of these nations come together to reclaim Africa from external control and shape its future.”
Expressing his eagerness for Formula 1 to make a comeback to Africa, Hamilton noted that the continent has not hosted a Grand Prix since 1993, when the South African Grand Prix took place at Kyalami. He advocated for the inclusion of an African race on the Formula 1 calendar, pointing out that other continents have multiple races while Africa remains excluded.
The racing icon reflected on his visits to countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa, praising their potential as future Grand Prix hosts. Hamilton conveyed his determination to see Africa represented in Formula 1 events before his retirement, actively engaging with Formula 1’s decision-makers to facilitate this goal.
“I have ancestral roots in various African nations like Togo and Benin. It’s a matter of pride for me to connect with my heritage, and I am committed to ensuring that Africa is part of the Formula 1 circuit before I step away from the sport,” Hamilton emphasized.
