A 63-year-old British traveler was rescued following a harrowing night stranded in a jungle teeming with snakes. Gordon Dewar, who had been cycling through Chiang Mai province in Thailand, ventured off the main road for a nature experience. Attempting to navigate a forest trail in the Phrao district, he got disoriented in the rough terrain on January 10.
Running out of food and water, Gordon became stuck in the forest as night fell. He opted to camp in the dense woodland before seeking help from the authorities the next morning. Surviving amidst cobras, pit vipers, bears, elephants, and leopards, he was eventually located by rescue teams.
Expressing relief at being found, Gordon acknowledged the assistance that led to his safe return. The Chiang Mai Tourist Police received a distress call around 10:30 am local time, mobilizing local rescuers, motocross riders, volunteers, and drone operators to search the jungle. They discovered Gordon fatigued and dehydrated after enduring about 15 hours without sustenance.
The head of the Phrao rescue team noted Gordon’s dehydration and the collaborative efforts between the Tourist Police and the rescue team. Following a report received at 10:30 am, they reached Gordon by nearly 1 pm, with him waiting for about three hours. Approximately 10 team members aided in his rescue, overcoming challenges posed by the rugged terrain. Gordon received essential care for his dehydration, cuts, and bruises.
After enduring muscle strain from days of continuous cycling, Gordon was safely extracted from the forest on a motocross motorcycle, accompanied by his intact bicycle. Grateful for the rescue team’s support, he expressed his gratitude before resuming his cycling journey.
