Rachel Reeves, the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, has announced a commitment to significantly enhance the UK’s railway system by injecting substantial funds. She criticized the Conservative government and Reform party for allegedly planning to withdraw £45 billion from the North.
During a press event in Leeds, the Chancellor emphasized the government’s intention to allocate additional resources to the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) project in the upcoming spending review. Reeves accused the Tories of neglecting the north for over 14 years and pledged to prioritize the region’s development.
Describing the transport transformation as a personal mission, Reeves stressed the importance of financial backing to materialize infrastructure projects. She highlighted the significance of tangible investments in building and improving railways to stimulate economic growth across the country and uplift the living standards of residents.
The initial phase of the initiative will focus on enhancing connectivity on current rail lines linking Sheffield to Leeds, Leeds to York, and Leeds to Bradford. Subsequent phases will introduce a new route from Liverpool to Manchester via Manchester airport and Warrington, followed by improved connections from Manchester to Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York.
In a strong rebuke directed at Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, Reeves criticized their policies, alleging they would be detrimental to the North. She emphasized her party’s commitment to fully supporting the Northern Powerhouse Rail project and connecting various towns and cities for the greater benefit of the region.
Reeves also assured of more funding opportunities in the upcoming spending review to accelerate the realization of the project’s goals by the early 2030s. As the Chancellor, she affirmed that financial commitments would be made to ensure the success of the railway development plans.
