“McFly’s Tom and Giovanna Fletcher Discuss Children’s Phone Usage”

Date:

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to give their 11-year-old son a phone as he prepares to start secondary school in September.

Prior to this, the couple understood the importance of communicating with each other and their son about the responsibilities and safety measures that come with owning a phone.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about children’s exposure to inappropriate content and mental health issues related to phone usage. She emphasized the need for parents to engage in conversations with their children to empower them in navigating the digital world.

Following the holiday season, many children have received smartphones as gifts, prompting families to address both the challenges and benefits associated with this technology.

Over the upcoming year, a campaign named The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, will encourage families to discuss online device usage, regardless of their children’s age. The initiative aims to highlight available resources and support, including Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits and assistance for parents and children.

Giovanna, along with her husband Tom, a frontman of the band McFly and a children’s author, have three sons, aged seven, nine, and eleven. The younger children have tablets for messaging and gaming, while the eldest has a restricted smartphone for communication purposes.

Giovanna stressed the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with children about the limitations and reasons behind setting restrictions on their devices.

She also acknowledged the need for parents to limit their own screen time and set boundaries around device usage within the family environment.

Providing children with internet-enabled phones grants them access to a vast digital world, which underscores the importance of introducing these privileges gradually as children mature.

Here are tips to ensure your kids’ online safety:

1. Establish a child account: Setting up a child account for new devices enables easier management of parental controls and screen time, allowing adjustments as children grow.

2. Verify the correct age: Accurately entering your child’s age on their account ensures appropriate safety settings are activated automatically.

3. Activate safety filters: Ensure safety and search filters are enabled on all search engines to block inappropriate content effectively.

4. Utilize parental controls: Access our Little Digital Helps Toolkit for tailored support and guidance by age group to select suitable controls for your family.

5. Foster ongoing conversations: Regularly discuss online activities and smartphone usage with your child, utilizing meal times as an opportunity to engage and monitor their digital experiences.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safe setup of new devices to protect children from potential online risks and vulnerabilities resulting from impulsive behavior.
