“Caledonian Sleeper Considers Manchester Stop in Expansion Plans”

Date:

The head of the renowned Caledonian Sleeper has suggested potential future destinations as the train service commences journeys from Birmingham.

Recently, the Sleeper made its debut stop at Birmingham International, picking up passengers at 10.44pm before heading to Scotland. This marked a significant event as it is the first sleeper service connecting Birmingham to Scotland in thirty years. Managing Director Graham Kelly mentioned that discussions were ongoing about adding more stops but nothing had been confirmed yet.

When asked about the possibility of including Manchester as a stop, Kelly stated that it depended on logistical considerations and passenger demand. He highlighted the challenge of finding suitable timings for the stop due to operational complexities.

Kelly indicated that future expansion plans may focus on additional Scottish locations but emphasized that these were still in the early planning stages for the upcoming rail years.

Currently, Manchester does not have any sleeper train services, and if the Caledonian Sleeper extends its route there, it could offer a convenient overnight travel option for passengers heading to Scotland or London.

The Birmingham service on Thursday featured a traditional Scottish performance and welcomed railway enthusiasts on board. Kelly praised the collaborative efforts that led to Birmingham’s inclusion in the schedule without requiring extra resources.

He also shared that the Sleeper service is environmentally friendly, emitting significantly less CO2 compared to car and air travel. With the addition of the Birmingham stop, the service is expected to operate closer to full capacity, but ticket prices will remain unchanged.

Regarding seating options, Kelly addressed the issue of non-reclining seats, explaining that UK rail regulations restrict the use of reclining seats. However, he mentioned that cabin lighting adjustments had been made based on customer feedback.

The Caledonian Sleeper aims to provide a comfortable and sustainable travel experience for passengers, with potential expansion plans and improved services on the horizon.
