“UK Braces for 25-Inch Snowfall: Severe Weather Alert”

Date:

The United Kingdom is bracing for harsh weather conditions, with recent forecasts showing blizzards extending southward to London and Birmingham, and one area expecting up to 25 inches of snow.

Anticipated heavy snowfall, set to arrive imminently, will cover one region with 65cm (25 inches) of snow today. WXCharts maps, utilizing MetDesk data, indicate temperatures dropping to a chilling -11C in parts of Scotland as a cold snap moves across the country.

Concurrently, the Met Office has issued multiple yellow warnings for ice and snow affecting various regions. Four yellow alerts were in place for Monday, with an additional five yellow weather warnings announced for today.

The National Weather Agency cautions that the snow and icy conditions may lead to travel disruptions and potential power outages in some areas due to the severe weather. WXCHARTS maps show that regions including Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen, and Glasgow will be covered in snow on Tuesday, with the Northern Highlands and the Isle of Skye expected to receive 65cm of snow.

By 6am on Tuesday, snowfall is projected to reach parts of England, encompassing London, Birmingham, Manchester, Stoke on Trent, and Newcastle. The maps suggest that by Tuesday evening, areas around Southampton, Bristol, Plymouth, and Cornwall will also experience snowfall.

The Met Office’s forecast indicates wintry showers in parts of Wales and southwest England at the start of Tuesday. As the day progresses, rain, sleet, and snow are forecast to move southeast across Scotland and Northern Ireland before reaching Wales and England later on.

Moreover, the Met Office warns of disruptive snowfall possibly affecting central and northern Scotland from late Tuesday morning to early evening. Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert mentioned a range of winter weather hazards expected throughout the week, with low temperatures, snow showers, and the risk of ice. Several severe weather warnings have been issued and are likely to be updated as the week progresses.

Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts a continuation of cold weather with frontal systems moving in from the west, bringing a mixture of rain, sleet, and snow across the country, with a risk of strong winds.

In the long-range forecast for Saturday through Monday, January 19, a changeable period is expected with Atlantic frontal systems occasionally affecting the UK, bringing rain likely preceded by snow in some areas, especially in northern and eastern regions. Significant snowfall is possible, particularly on northern hills, with the potential for strong winds interspersed with quieter, drier periods.
