Danish MP Warns of US Invasion Threat to Greenland

Date:

Danish MP, Rasmus Jarlov, has cautioned that no one is immune if the United States decides to invade Greenland, raising concerns over a perceived imperialist agenda under the Trump administration. Jarlov’s warning comes amidst repeated threats by Trump to annex Greenland, a Danish territory that the US deems crucial for its national security, citing its strategic location.

Despite existing treaties allowing the US to station troops in Greenland and benefit from advantageous resource extraction agreements, the American military presence on the island has decreased post the Cold War era. Trump’s rhetoric has displayed a confrontational stance towards Denmark, a NATO ally that supported the US in conflicts like Afghanistan post-9/11.

Jarlov highlighted the potential risks not only for Denmark and Greenland but also for European nations with territories in the Americas, such as the UK, should Trump act on his invasion plans. He emphasized the unpredictability of American aggression and the possible repercussions for peaceful allies like Denmark and Greenland.

Furthermore, Trump’s “Donroe Doctrine,” a modern interpretation of the historic Monroe Doctrine asserting US dominance in the Western Hemisphere, was flaunted after the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Jarlov criticized the notion of a US invasion of Greenland, calling it absurd and unnecessary, potentially leading to severe consequences.

While only a minority of Greenlanders support joining the US, with the majority opposing the idea according to a recent poll, Jarlov does not foresee a direct invasion but anticipates US efforts to sway public opinion through economic incentives. However, he deems any attempt to undermine Greenland’s sovereignty unacceptable and expects a similar response from US citizens if faced with a similar situation.

Jarlov’s stance underscores the delicate geopolitical implications of a potential US intervention in Greenland and the wider implications for international relations.
