The owner of a bar in Switzerland, where a tragic fire claimed the lives of 40 individuals, has been accused of fleeing the scene with a cash register filled with money. Jessica Moretti, 40 years old, allegedly disregarded the safety concerns of patrons as the fire engulfed the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a popular ski resort town. Ms. Moretti, who co-owns the bar with her husband Jacques Moretti, 49, is now facing an investigation by Swiss authorities.
The couple is being charged with negligence leading to bodily harm, negligent homicide, and negligent arson. Reports from various media sources suggest that Ms. Moretti, a French national, could also be charged with failing to aid individuals in distress. The tragic incident resulted in multiple casualties as the fire rapidly spread during a New Year’s Day celebration.
Eyewitnesses claimed that Ms. Moretti fled the scene while patrons trapped inside pleaded for help. Surveillance footage allegedly captured her leaving with the cash register, prioritizing the evening’s earnings. The fire, believed to have been triggered by sparklers held too close to the ceiling, is considered one of the most devastating in Swiss history.
Authorities reported that 119 individuals sustained injuries in the blaze, which swiftly spread due to flammable materials. The victims, aged between 14 and 39, included Charlotte Niddam, who was educated in Britain. Families of the deceased have filed legal complaints with the Swiss prosecutor’s office.
A Geneva-based lawyer, Romain Jordan, confirmed that each family had submitted a complaint and joined the legal proceedings as plaintiffs. The lawyer did not comment specifically on the details of the complaint. Following the tragic event, Ms. Moretti and her husband were accused of disabling their social media accounts, with the bar suspending its online presence during rescue operations.
Authorities are now examining renovations carried out in 2015 amid allegations of inadequate safety measures. Investigations will focus on the use of fire extinguishers and fire exits within the establishment.
