A man tragically lost his life following a meeting with another man who was reportedly driven by a preference for high-risk sexual activities, a court learned. Michael Barron, 38, passed away during an encounter with Josh Baxter, 28, on January 26, 2025, as detailed in proceedings at Minshull Street Crown Court. The two individuals had connected through the dating app Grindr in January the previous year and had arranged to meet at Mr. Baxter’s residence, according to court testimony.
Witnesses recounted that Mr. Baxter allegedly restrained Mr. Barron face-down on a bed, lay on top of him for an extended period, and purportedly strangled and suffocated him with such intensity that it resulted in fractures to a bone and cartilage in his neck. This led to Mr. Barron experiencing cerebral hypoxia due to oxygen deprivation to the brain, ultimately causing cardiac arrest and his demise, the court was informed.
Following the incident, Mr. Baxter is said to have conducted various online searches, including inquiries such as “If you accidentally kill someone by strangling them in sex do you go to prison.” Additionally, searches for “purple face while sleeping” and “if someone died during kinky sex would you go to prison” were allegedly performed.
Mr. Baxter has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, intentional strangulation or suffocation, and unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm. He is currently undergoing trial at Minshull Street Crown Court, with the proceedings anticipated to span up to two weeks, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
In her prosecution presentation, Anna Whyte KC asserted that Mr. Baxter had specific sexual inclinations, which he had disclosed to Mr. Barron in a Grindr message. The exchange detailed Mr. Baxter’s preferences for rough activities, including choking, tying up, hair pulling, spitting, name-calling, intoxication to weakness, and physical aggression. The court heard that Mr. Barron expressed his interest in being restrained, gagged, hooded, and subjected to pain and torture, aligning with Mr. Baxter’s desires.
Ms. Whyte KC highlighted that Mr. Baxter’s actions were driven by a proclivity for high-risk sexual behaviors. The messages between the two individuals revealed discussions on their sexual preferences, with Mr. Barron indicating his desire to be in vulnerable positions for sexual activities involving pain and control. Subsequently, they scheduled a meeting for later that day.
The prosecution contended that Mr. Baxter, while receiving consent for certain acts, failed to consider the potential risks to Mr. Barron’s well-being, emphasizing that his actions could have endangered Mr. Barron’s breathing and caused severe harm.
The court was informed that after Mr. Barron arrived at Mr. Baxter’s residence, the two individuals sought Ketamine and purchased additional alcohol from a local store. The last activity on Mr. Barron’s phone was a brief call to a drug dealer at 5:45 pm, as alleged.
Between 7 pm and 7:56 pm, Mr. Baxter ceased phone usage, leading prosecutors to suggest that during that period, intimate activities occurred between the two men. Details emerged indicating that Mr. Barron was restrained by his wrists and ankles face-down, potentially involving the use of a makeshift mask during the sexual encounter, as per the prosecutor’s statements.
At 7:56 pm, while Mr. Barron remained restrained with neck injuries, Mr. Baxter communicated with others on Grindr and subsequently ordered food via Deliveroo. He then conducted online searches related to assessing life signs, indicating a sense of urgency only after Mr. Barron’s health deteriorated.
Following these events, Mr. Baxter called emergency services and administered CPR as instructed. However, his actions prior to seeking medical help and subsequent online searches raised concerns about his attitude towards Mr. Barron’s well-being, according to prosecutors.
In conclusion, Ms. Whyte KC characterized Mr. Baxter’s behavior as profoundly reckless, emphasizing his awareness of the risks involved in his actions and his pursuit of extreme sexual gratification. She asserted that Mr. Barron’s death was not accidental but a consequence of Mr. Baxter’s recklessness and relentless pursuit of his sexual desires.
Mr. Baxter, residing in Lakeside Rise, Blackley, was apprehended the following day and opted to remain silent during police questioning. He maintains his innocence against the manslaughter charges, with the trial ongoing.
