Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped a tragic fate by changing seats just moments before a fatal accident claimed the lives of two of his friends. The incident occurred on Monday, resulting in Joshua sustaining minor injuries and being hospitalized. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, citing brake failure as the cause.
Reportedly, Joshua initially sat in the front seat but was asked to switch with another passenger due to visibility issues. The journey began in Lagos, where the unfortunate accident took place. The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been formally charged with multiple offenses related to the accident, with a court date set for January 20.
In a tribute to the deceased friends, who were also long-time associates of Joshua, it was revealed that one of them served as his strength and conditioning coach while the other was a trainer. Joshua, a British boxer of Nigerian descent, was on vacation in Nigeria following a recent victory in Miami.
Prominent figures in the boxing world, including Eddie Hearn, Tony Bellew, Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, and Wladimir Klitschko, have expressed their condolences over the tragic loss. Joshua, released from the hospital on New Year’s Eve, has refrained from public statements regarding the accident but has been declared fit to recover at home.
In a joint statement with Ogun state, it was announced that Joshua and his mother paid their respects at a funeral home in Lagos to honor their departed friends before their repatriation.
