“Boxing world mourns loss of rising star Paul McCullagh Jr.”

The boxing community is in mourning following the tragic passing of 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior. Hailing from Belfast, McCullagh had a successful amateur career, securing the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and representing Ireland in an international match against the Netherlands.

With two victories in his professional record, McCullagh, known as ‘The Irish Drago’, fought for both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.

He was the grandson of renowned Belfast boxing coach Paul McCullagh, a revered figure in the sport who coached legendary boxers like Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell. McCullagh’s father, Paul, a professional referee and former champion amateur boxer, also mourns the loss.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) expressed deep sadness over McCullagh’s passing, highlighting his accomplishments and contributions to the sport. Former teammates and trainers paid tribute to McCullagh, remembering him fondly for his camaraderie and talent.

The Belfast boxing community also joined in honoring McCullagh’s memory, offering condolences to his family, friends, and the boxing clubs he was associated with.
