Andy Murray Eyes Transition to Golf Caddie Role

Date:

Andy Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced his intention to transition from professional tennis to golf. Following his retirement from tennis last year, the 38-year-old, who briefly coached Novak Djokovic, is now concentrating on honing his golf skills.

While Murray has participated in various celebrity golf events in the past 18 months, he concedes that becoming a professional golfer is unlikely. However, he still holds aspirations of engaging with the sport in a different role. Speaking on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, Murray expressed his desire to work as a caddie for a professional golfer and to compete in The Open.

“I am contemplating the idea of becoming a golf caddie, hopefully for a top golfer at some point,” Murray shared. “I have a passion for golf, and if you love the sport, being a caddie would be a fantastic opportunity.”

The tennis icon disclosed that his dream partner is Robert MacIntyre, with whom he previously teamed up at the BMW PGA Championships. When asked about the potential overshadowing of the player he supports due to his celebrity status, Murray responded, “Initially, there might be excitement, but eventually, it becomes normal.”

Murray added, “That would be the ultimate scenario. Imagine carrying Robert MacIntyre’s bag when he wins The Open. That would be a dream job.”

There has been speculation that Murray might aim to qualify for The Open in the future, but he dismissed those notions promptly. “I do not aspire to compete in The Open,” Murray stated. “I aim to participate in the regional qualifying rounds at some point. It would be a fun challenge to attempt it if I reach that level, but realistically, I do not believe I could qualify for The Open.”

Murray acknowledged the vast gap in skill level between amateur players like himself and professional golfers, emphasizing the significant disparity in abilities.

In other news, Sky has enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle by including HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+, and Hayu, along with 135 channels and comprehensive coverage of the Premier League and EFL matches. Sky offers over 1,400 live matches across various sports, including at least 215 matches from the Premier League, Formula 1, darts, and golf.
