Food prices have been on a consistent upward trend due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. This situation becomes more disheartening when consumers visit supermarkets and notice price hikes on their favorite products.
To cope with rising costs, many individuals have turned to purchasing supermarket own-brand basic items instead of opting for well-known brands. However, this cost-saving strategy doesn’t always prove effective, as demonstrated during a recent visit to Marks & Spencer. While M&S is known for its luxury offerings, customers typically expect to find reasonably priced everyday products in-store.
For instance, M&S’ Classic Mayonnaise is priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, slightly higher than Sainsbury’s Thick & Creamy at 99p and Tesco Mayonnaise at 95p for the same size. However, the introduction of M&S’ new Only… Ingredients range revealed a significant price disparity. The Olive Oil Mayonnaise, made with only six ingredients, was priced at a hefty £4.50 for a 250g tub.
Despite the Olive Oil Mayonnaise’s premium pricing, other items in the Only… Ingredients range remain relatively affordable compared to their original counterparts. For example, the M&S Only 6 Ingredients 6 Heritage Gold Pork Sausages cost £4 for a pack of six, while the M&S Only 5 Ingredients 4 White Rolls are priced at just £2 a pack.
The high cost of olive oil in British supermarkets can be attributed to global factors affecting world prices, as well as import-specific issues impacting the UK market. Reduced global olive oil supply due to poor harvests, a supply and demand imbalance, higher import costs, currency effects, and retail pricing strategies all contribute to the increased prices seen by consumers.
While the Olive Oil Mayonnaise stands out as a pricier option within the Only… Ingredients range, the overall range offers a variety of products that are in line with consumer expectations. Despite the challenges posed by escalating prices, it seems that consumers may need to adjust their budgets if they wish to continue enjoying certain premium food items regularly.
