“Trump Threatens Insurrection Act Over ICE Protests”

Date:

President Trump has issued a warning about using an old law to deploy military forces in response to protests against ICE in Minnesota. The President threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act if local officials do not take action to halt demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in the state. The tensions escalated following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, leading to widespread protests.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his intention to enforce the Insurrection Act to address the unrest caused by protesters attacking ICE officers. The act, established in 1807 by President Thomas Jefferson, empowers the President to utilize military forces for law enforcement purposes during domestic disturbances. Trump had previously indicated his interest in utilizing this act to address issues related to illegal immigration.

These developments come after Minnesota announced legal action against the administration, describing the ICE operations as a “federal invasion” of the state. Furthermore, six federal prosecutors resigned in protest against the Justice Department’s decision not to investigate Good’s shooting as a civil rights violation.

The Trump administration defended the ICE agent’s actions, labeling Good as a “domestic terrorist” and justifying the shooting as an act of self-defense. However, local officials and protesters disputed this account, pointing to video evidence showing the events leading up to the shooting.

Amidst the escalating situation, Minneapolis officials condemned the presence of federal agents in the city, with Mayor Jacob Frey demanding ICE to leave, accusing them of causing chaos and harm in the community.

In a separate incident, a Venezuelan man was shot and wounded by an ICE officer during a traffic stop in Minneapolis, leading to further clashes between protesters and law enforcement. The heightened tensions in Minnesota were exacerbated by a crackdown on alleged fraud involving Somali residents initiated by the Department of Homeland Security.

Over 2,000 ICE agents have been deployed in the state for what is described as the agency’s largest immigration operation. Additional reinforcements are being sent to Minnesota in response to the ongoing protests sparked by recent events.
