Sky Sports host Jo Wilson recently shared her harrowing experience battling cancer, expressing her initial fear of death and mental preparation for the worst upon receiving the diagnosis. Diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2022 following a routine smear test, Wilson underwent a challenging period marked by the spread of cancer to her lymph nodes. After six weeks of treatment, she finally received the all-clear in June 2023.
Having joined Sky Sports in 2011, Wilson underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy to combat the disease, ultimately saving her life but leading to early menopause that significantly impacted her career as a presenter. The diagnosis came just two years after the birth of her daughter Mabel in 2020.
In a new documentary titled “Football, Cancer, and Me” on Sky Sports News, Wilson candidly discussed her journey with cancer, revealing her reluctance to burden others with the news despite grappling with thoughts of mortality. The documentary also features discussions with colleagues Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray, who shared their own battles with cancer.
Saunders underwent surgery due to a brain infection after a thyroid cancer diagnosis, recounting her challenging experience that left her partner, football manager Will Still, shocked by the visible aftermath. Mowbray, who disclosed a bowel cancer diagnosis the previous year, highlighted the daunting nature of the surgical procedure and the difficulties of managing a football club while dealing with the illness.
