“Nissan Unveils Third-Gen LEAF, Saves 40,000 UK Jobs”

Date:

The world’s first mass-market electric vehicle’s latest iteration was unveiled today, quietly emerging from the production line and contributing to the preservation of nearly 40,000 jobs in the UK.

Produced at a steady pace of one car per minute in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, the third-generation Nissan LEAF is the result of a substantial £450 million investment, aiming to ensure the longevity of the workforce. This investment is anticipated to create up to 2,000 additional jobs, adding to the existing 7,000 roles at Nissan UK and the 30,000 jobs within their supply chain.

During a tour of the Sunderland production line, Jamie Williams, a 36-year-old senior supervisor, emphasized the significance of the new model for the local community and the extensive workforce across London, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, and Cranfield, Bedfordshire. Williams, whose father also worked at the plant, expressed pride in contributing to the production of the latest model, acknowledging the impact on tens of thousands of individuals in the supply chain.

Production engineering director Guy Reid, 46, from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, with 22 years of experience at Nissan, highlighted the meticulous supply chain that handles millions of parts daily. He emphasized the pride and awareness among the workforce regarding the nationwide implications of the new model.

Logistics section manager Jess Brown, 38, based in Tyneside, emphasized the ripple effect of the new model, citing the creation of numerous jobs in the battery gigaplant and other suppliers, thereby providing job security to a vast workforce.

The manufacturing process witnessed by The Mirror involved thorough checks by workmen and a final “shower test” to ensure waterproofing. Dashboards were swiftly installed, with batteries supplied by a nearby manufacturer. The latest technology incorporated in the £32,000 LEAF allows for an impressive range of up to 386 miles for the 75 kWh battery, with a charging time of 30 minutes for a 273-mile range.

Max Messina, Nissan’s Chair in Europe, hailed the day as monumental, emphasizing the LEAF’s legacy as an iconic electric vehicle that has sold over 700,000 units worldwide and significantly reduced CO2 emissions. The production of the ‘EV36Zero’ model involves cutting-edge technology such as virtual reality, digital mapping, high-tech robots, and automated facilities, showcasing Nissan’s commitment to innovation.

The UK government’s Electric Vehicle Cluster Fund aims to facilitate the transition to electric vehicle part production, with additional funding provided by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness for EV charging infrastructure and the expansion of the electric bus fleet. Nissan’s vice president for manufacturing, Adam Pennick, commended the workforce’s dedication over nearly four decades, acknowledging their pivotal role in the plant’s success.
