Mitchell Lawrie has made history by becoming the youngest player ever to win three senior men’s titles, breaking Luke Littler’s previous record. The talented teenage darts player from Scotland took home the WDF Irish Classic championship in Killarney on Saturday night, only four days after turning 15.
In a remarkable display of skill, Lawrie secured victory by defeating Ronan McDonagh in the final match, hitting four 180s and maintaining an impressive average of 98.60 in a 5-1 win. Prior to his senior triumph, Mitchell also claimed the Irish Classic Youths title, defeating Kaya Basal 4-1 with an average score of 90.95.
Among the spectators cheering Lawrie on at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland were his father, Fraser, and grandfather, Dougie, who witnessed their young prodigy clinch another prestigious title.
Lawrie achieved this milestone at a younger age than Luke Littler, who was 15 years, five months, and four days old when he accomplished a similar feat. Mitchell Lawrie will now be competing in the upcoming men’s and youth WDF world championships at Lakeside later this month.
Meanwhile, as the reigning PDC World Champion prepares to defend his title at Alexandra Palace, Lawrie, who previously won the British Open and Welsh Open this year, is gearing up for a potential showdown with his predecessor.
Although Lawrie will have to wait until he turns 16 to face Littler in PDC competitions, his family is fully supportive of his journey in the sport. In an interview with The Sun, Dougie Lawrie emphasized that they want Mitchell to carve his path in darts without being compared to anyone else.
Dougie also mentioned that he introduced Mitchell to the sport of darts at a young age, teaching him to play with aggression, which has undoubtedly contributed to his success as a player.
