Trump Claims Russia and China Unfazed by NATO sans US

Date:

Former President Donald Trump recently asserted that Russia and China exhibit no fear of NATO without the involvement of the United States. This proclamation followed the US’s interception of two oil tankers linked to Venezuela.

Trump took to Truth Social to highlight how his governance prompted NATO allies to increase defense spending, a move he claims has acted as a deterrent to Russia, China, and in defense of Ukraine. He raised doubts about NATO’s commitment to aiding the US in a crisis, emphasizing his efforts to enhance the country’s military during his initial term.

In his statement, Trump emphasized the significant boost in NATO members’ defense spending during his tenure, indicating a shift from 2% to 5% of GDP, attributing this change to his influence.

The former president further asserted that his actions prevented Russia from seizing Ukraine and boasted about his role in ending eight conflicts. He criticized Norway, a NATO member, for overlooking him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump reiterated that Russia and China do not view NATO as a threat, suggesting that they only recognize a US military revitalized under his administration. He questioned the value of NATO to the US and pledged unwavering support to the alliance, regardless of reciprocal commitments.

His remarks on NATO coincided with discussions about the strategic importance of Greenland, a semi-autonomous region under Denmark, which Trump considers a national security priority. The Danish Prime Minister cautioned against any US aggression towards Greenland, warning of potential repercussions on the NATO alliance.

Additionally, the White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, highlighted the strategic significance of US control over Greenland in deterring Chinese and Russian activities in the Arctic region.

Notably, recent US actions in Venezuela have raised concerns among NATO members. The US military successfully seized two oil tankers linked to Venezuela, with one vessel intercepted in the Caribbean Sea and another in the North Atlantic under allegations of violating US sanctions.

The operation in the North Atlantic involved British forces, RAF aircraft, and naval support, demonstrating international cooperation in enforcing sanctions and maintaining security in the region.
