Researchers in Vermont have been intentionally infecting thousands of trees with Dutch elm disease this summer. The aim is to test whether a new generation of elms, bred from disease survivors, could possess resistance to the fungus transmitted by bark beetles that has been wreaking havoc on elm populations in the United States and Canada for years.
The long-term goal is to restore areas where majestic elms once flourished, lining streets and thriving near waterways.
Gus Goodwin of The Nature Conservancy expressed the devastation caused by the loss of elm trees over the years. The experiment in Vermont, along with similar initiatives in Canada, seeks to develop solutions to combat the disease as it spreads to new regions.
Alison Morrison from the University of Guelph arboretum mentioned that the loss has not been in terms of the elm population but rather in their ability to mature.
The Decline of Elm Trees in Fredericton
Fredericton, known as the “City of Stately Elms,” witnessed a significant decline in its elm tree population due to Dutch elm disease during the 1960s and 70s. An estimated 10,000 trees were lost, leaving only about 1,000 mature elms remaining. Professor Anthony Taylor from the University of New Brunswick highlighted the ongoing challenge of the disease affecting even surviving trees.
Dutch elm disease attacks the vascular system of elms when transmitted by bark beetles, leading to the blockage of water-conducting tissues and ultimately causing the death of the trees within a few years of infection.

The fungus is further disseminated by bark beetles laying eggs in infected trees, creating carriers that can infect healthy trees. The control of Dutch elm disease involves the swift removal of infected elms to prevent further spread.
In the past, healthy elms were also removed through a practice known as sanitization, inadvertently impacting the disease tolerance of the overall population.
