New Study Reveals Milky Way’s Ancient Galactic Merger

A recent study shedding light on the formation of the Milky Way galaxy suggests a significant event occurred approximately 11.8 billion years ago when a smaller dwarf galaxy was absorbed into the Milky Way. This early galactic merger, the earliest known in the Milky Way’s history, highlights how the galaxy evolved not only through internal star formation but also by merging with smaller galaxies attracted by its gravitational force.

The researchers identified the dwarf galaxy, named Low-energy-Kraken-Heracles (LKH), as distinct from larger galaxies like the Milky Way. They estimated that the dwarf galaxy contained stars with a mass equivalent to about 500 million times that of the sun at the time of the merger, approximately one-quarter the size of the Milky Way at that time.

Using data from the Hubble and Gaia telescopes, the researchers studied stellar clusters within the Milky Way’s innermost 20,000 light-years. These clusters, each housing hundreds of thousands of stars, provided insights into their age, chemical composition, and trajectory. The merger that integrated these stars into the Milky Way occurred roughly two billion years after the Big Bang.

Lead author Davide Massari, an astrophysicist at the National Institute for Astrophysics in Bologna, Italy, emphasized the significance of this discovery as the first merger event experienced by the Milky Way in its early stages. The study suggests that the merger infused the Milky Way with a significant number of stars, interstellar gas, and dark matter, fueling star formation.

Massari explained that while the merger was peaceful in terms of star collisions, it was more explosive in terms of gas interactions, likely triggering the formation of numerous stars. He noted that many stars originating from the dwarf galaxy are likely still present in the inner regions of the Milky Way, hidden within stellar clusters due to interstellar dust.

The Milky Way has been involved in two other major galactic mergers, including one with the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus dwarf galaxy and ongoing interactions with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy over the past six billion years. Massari highlighted the impact of these mergers on the formation of the solar system and Earth, underscoring the importance of understanding the Milky Way’s history in addressing fundamental questions about the origins of our universe.

The research offers valuable insights into the complex evolution of the Milky Way and its interactions with neighboring galaxies, shedding light on the processes that have shaped our cosmic environment.
