The union representing Canadian workers at Stellantis is urging the automaker to uphold its commitment to retool the Brampton, Ontario, plant despite indications that it may be sold. Stellantis recently disclosed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian armored vehicle maker Roshel regarding a potential sale of the Brampton facility. Unifor national president Lana Payne voiced the union’s opposition to the automaker’s decision to sell the plant, emphasizing the importance of understanding that Stellantis intends to exit Brampton and urging government intervention.
The Brampton plant has been inactive since 2023 when plans to retool it for Jeep Compass production were halted. Unifor insists on Stellantis fulfilling its promise to retool the plant for Jeep Compass production instead of closing or selling it to maintain future vehicle production integrity. Stellantis, however, expressed its commitment to Canada, highlighting its continued production in Windsor and investments in advanced research and development. The automaker encouraged discussions between Unifor and Roshel to grasp the vision for the Brampton plant.
Roshel affirmed its ambitious production plans for Brampton and readiness to re-employ Unifor workers, emphasizing the creation of over 2,000 jobs and the introduction of new capabilities to the facility. Stellantis cited challenges in returning production to Brampton due to evolving market and trade conditions, leading to the exploration of potential solutions, including the MOU with Roshel. Stellantis believes that partnering with Roshel presents an opportunity to revitalize the plant, create jobs, and foster long-term economic growth.
Despite ongoing negotiations, the possibility of strike action looms as the current collective agreement nears expiration. Unifor aims to secure a settlement without resorting to strikes but acknowledges the real possibility if necessary. Worker anxiety at the Brampton plant remains high, with concerns about financial support and the plant’s potential closure.
Industry expert Greg Layson described the situation surrounding Stellantis and the Brampton plant as a complex and challenging scenario exacerbated by the trade war and unmet commitments. The MOU with Roshel offers a potential resolution, although Layson emphasized the importance of preserving the plant and fulfilling production mandates to maintain stability within the automotive industry.
