Alexander emphasized the UK’s long-standing view of Iran as a security threat in the Middle East and globally, citing the regime’s repression of its own people. She stressed the need to address the ongoing violence in Iran as a top priority.
Regarding Iran’s actions, Alexander highlighted its disruptive role and collaboration with Vladimir Putin to circumvent oil sanctions. When asked about the UK’s reaction if Iran’s government were to be overthrown, Alexander suggested a similar response would be likely.
The Labour representative expressed the UK’s desire for a peaceful transfer of power in Iran to ensure the restoration of democratic values and fundamental freedoms for its citizens. She acknowledged the presence of a small number of British nationals in Iran.
In response to threats made by Iran’s parliament speaker regarding potential military strikes, US President Donald Trump voiced support for Iranian protesters seeking freedom. Reports indicated that Trump had been presented with military options for a strike on Iran but had not made a final decision.
Alexander declined to comment on foreign policy or military plans of other countries but expressed concern over the violence against peaceful protesters in Iran. She urged Iranian authorities to protect their citizens’ lives, uphold fundamental freedoms, and exercise restraint in responding to protests.
The US State Department issued a warning not to underestimate President Trump’s resolve. Any decision on military action would ultimately lie with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US military in the Middle East remains prepared to defend its interests and allies.
